NearIT technology solution for proximity

Geofence integration

The geofence integration has been fundamental to NearIT. It has given us the chance to offer our clients an alternative to beacons, including different features and usability, but also it has given us the chance to solve one of the limits of beacons.

Let’s start from the beginning: the difference between geofence and beacon.

  • Geofence: you can use it outdoor, taking advantage of the smartphone GPS positioning, to detect the entrance of a user in a certain area of interest. It’s a circular area designated through our platform, and it can be done on every place in the world (example: an area above a train station or close to a competitor)
  • Beacon: it’s mostly used indoor to monitor or interact with users. It’s an hardware and needs to be set up in the designated location. It uses the smartphone localization and the Low Energy Bluetooth, so it allows to define smaller and more detailed areas.

Now that we have clarified the differences between the two, we can explain how the geofence technology has helped us to solve the beacon’s limit. iOS doesn’t permit to monitor more than 20 regions (of beacons or geofences) at the same time, so it doesn’t allow to define more than 20 behaviours with the app in background. To overcome this limit, we have developed an algorithm that, by positioning beacons within a geofence area, is able to move across different areas allowing you to monitor unlimited regions.

Optimization and Performance

Our tree structure made of geofences and beacons has helped us to solve another problem of the users. The repeated scan of the bluetooth signal may affect the battery, and so we have decided to minimize it as much as possible. Using NearIT the scanning happens only when the user is inside the geofence area where the beacons are placed.

The geographic localization is also optimized thanks to the adoption of the different operative system best practices. In order to get as much consistent data as possible under any circumstance, NearIT prefers to use cell towers instead of the GPS. In this way the battery consumption is drastically reduced avoiding drain the battery of users.

Tracking and data collection

By using beacons and geofences you can analyse the users behaviours from a general to a more specific level.
Let’s make an example to better explain this concept: a supermarket manager wants to know the flow of his app users outside of his supermarket, and how many of them really interact with a beacon placed inside the store.

The store manager can use:

  • A geofence area above the neighborhood: This way he can track how many people that have downloaded the App, pass by the area everyday.
  • beacon close to the entrance of the store on monitoring mode: this beacon allows you to know how many users have walked in the store, even if the app is in background;
  • beacon placed in a specific area of the store on ranging mode: this allows you to know how many users have interacted with the beacon while the App was in foreground and if the beacon has been useful to influence their purchases.
